AND UNDER-KNOWN

Fans of The Misunderstood generally follow the band’s adept psych, but the discovery of some previously lost acetates brought a welcome, new complexion to the story. The Lost Acetates held recordings from 1965-66, when the band thunked out gristled garage, a state-of-nature version of The Remains. Track one, “She Got Me (Version 2),” was a hell of an unearthing. It pounds the “Paint it Black” beat stout over tattered amps. Through the right channels it could have been as embraced as any early Kinks number. But The Misunderstood never made it that far.
